Aaron Martyn may be young but he has a hell of a lot of talent, a catchy pop song “Slide Into My DM” and ambition that could take him far. We spoke to the popular YouTuber about his singles, cover, and everything in between.
1) What is your biggest inspiration for singing?
My biggest inspiration is Michael Jackson. When I was younger I would walk around with his dress-up suit on, wearing the white glove and practice his dance moves. On a day to day level, I look up to my manager who is also my Dad because I see him always making things happen in the music industry.
2) Who are some of your favorite artists?
I feel there are many great artists but my ultimate is Michael Jackson. He is a once in a lifetime artist.
3) Tell us about Slide Into My DM
It all started from a conversation in a car with my Dad. I told him I thought an artist who he was working with at the time (who was 10 years older than me) was hot. He laughed and told me he would tell her. So, I stupidly replied, “Yeah, tell her to slide into my DMs”. He asked me what did that mean, so I told him it meant ‘direct messages’. He picked up the phone and called her, told her while I was sitting there. It was funny and embarrassing at the same time. The next day we had a studio session and ‘Slide Into My DM’ was written.
4) Who do you believe you are or what you want to be as an artist?
I believe I am myself. I want to be recognized as an international artist with my own British style.
5). What has been your favorite song to cover?
I enjoyed recording all the covers but the one that got me gassed had to be Drake’s ‘One Dance’. This was my first ever cover and got over 120,000 views. I’m very happy with that result.
6) Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Selling out the 02 Arena.
7) What would you love people to know about you?
That I’m just a humble up, hard-working up and coming artist.
8) What do you have planned for the future?
I have my EP ‘From The DM To The DM’ coming out later this year. ‘Slide Into My DM’ is just the beginning of the story I am telling throughout my EP. There are six songs and will six videos. Each one leads on to the next. It’s all a part of one movie.
