Victoria: Kyneton residents warned to boil water due to burst water main contamination
Residents in one Aussie town have woken up to an emergency warning about their water supply and why they need to boil it before consumption.
VicEmergency issued an urgent water warning at about 1am on Wednesday to residents in Kyneton, about 70 minutes northwest of Melbourne.
Consumption of the unboiled water can cause gastro-like symptoms, as the water has become unsafe to drink after a water main compromised its safety.
Coliban Water said the warning could see people needing to boil their consumption water for “several days”.
“Coliban Water has repaired the burst water main, and the water supply will shortly be returned to normal, however it must be boiled before drinking and until Coliban Water confirms that it is safe to drink,” the statement said.
“Consumption of unboiled water can cause gastro-like symptoms. If you experience any of these symptoms, please contact your GP and inform your GP of this advisory.”
Residents are being urged to share the news with neighbours and friends in the area.
Residents in the area will have access to a water trailer in the Kyneton Showgrounds on Wednesday morning, where they can fill “suitable” containers to supplement their home water drinking supply.
The boiling advice extends to drinking water, water used to prepare baby formula and for brushing teeth.
It does not affect hand washing, showering and bathing, toilets, dish or clothes washing or garden water.
